In the Victorian era guttering went from troughs made from wood and lead to being mass produced from cast iron, but like Beta max vs VHS and the current variety of electric car charging sockets, every foundry made their own version of the gutter profiles.
The result was, as an example, the Notts Ogee was popular in Nottinghamshire and the Beaded Half Round profile gutters are more prevalent, even today, in Northern England and Scotland.
(The Notts Ogee gutter system is deeper than the same width version of Ogee gutter, giving it a slightly more rigid shape and a higher flow rate. As the Notts Ogee profile is asymmetrical, all sockets are found on the left side of each fitting, if facing the gutter head on. For this reason stopends and stopend outlets are either left or right-handed, and corners are either external or internal depending on which path the guttering needs to take.
